Dear Ms Feinberg,
I was recently informed that misinformation was provided Sunday at the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists conference by Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) pharmacy consultant, Victoria Hanson. On behalf of BNE, I would like to apologize for the error and provide clarification.
The Rules and Regulations on Controlled Substances, Part 80, Section 80.112 states that as of May 1, 1975 and every two years thereafter, all pharmacies shall prepare a controlled substance inventory. It is the policy of the Bureau to allow the biennial inventory to be done on any date, as long as the inventory is done at least every two years.
I hope this clarifies any confusion regarding the biennial inventory.
Please feel free to disseminate this e-mail to your members. Should you, or any members of the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists have any further questions regarding the biennial inventory, or any other controlled substance issue, you may call the Bureau’s toll free number at
(866) 811- 7957 and choose option #2 to speak to a Pharmacy Consultant.
Thank you
